The day drives off the gloomy night (2 versions)

In Musae Sioniae, Books VI, VII and VIII, Michael Praetorius offers SATB settings of all the hymns sung in schools and churches of his day (458 hymns – 746 settings). A three volume Cantionalbuch, for the melody is invariably carried by the Superius (soprano). Since the same hymn text was often sung to different melodies in different regions, Praetorius makes no selection — he simply sets them all.

For this particular hymn – a morning hymn by Michael Weisse from 1531 – he provides two versions.
No. 254 the most widespread melody;
No. 255 an interesting variant.
Both were recorded by the Huelgas Ensemble in a mixed recording. I separated both versions. Below the youtubes, the partition in modern notation.

REVISIONSBERICHT Musae Sioniae VIII (Fr. Blume)

The present volume of the Praetorius Complete Edition forms, together with Volumes VI and VII, the “Kantional” of Michael Praetorius in the English sense of the word. The three volumes present the most comprehensive hymnal of the period in contrapunctus simplex — that is, in plain four-part chordal writing. Volume VI encompasses the songs for the feasts and seasons of the church year. Volume VII contains the songs of Protestant doctrine (catechism, repentance and justification, the Lord’s Supper, songs of Christian conduct, etc.), to which four organ chorales are appended. Volume VIII adds the songs for daily life (household and devotional songs, songs of comfort and for the dying, songs for the course of the day, etc.) and concludes with several litanies and salutations. With 746 settings of 458 different texts, this “hymnal for the school choir,” as it may be called, encompasses virtually everything that was considered suitable for liturgical use throughout Protestant Germany around 1600.
