Burckhard Großman on Praetorius’ contribution

The now-blessed author, Master PRÆTORIUS, upon sending this psalm, also set down a fine instruction (Ordinantz) and several variations showing how he wished it to be performed. He also addressed a deeply moving and spiritually rich letter to me, in which he states that he composed this psalm not only to kindly grant my Christian request, but also as a farewell (Valete) to himself (or: his last Farewell), wishing to conclude [his work/his life] with it. Since he passed away blessedly shortly thereafter and was translated to the heavenly choir, it is presumed that he did not write down any further notes after this composition.
Therefore, in blessed and eternally praiseworthy memory of him, and out of bounden gratitude, I did not wish to omit this farewell and swan song of his last will here. Rather, I wished and felt obliged to prefix [publish] his instruction just as he sent it to me in his own hand.”
